Happy Labor Day

Most of us believe the Labor Day is just a celebration for all of us that work every day. However, it started out in a violent manner involving a  labor union. Check out the history of Labor Day. Today also signifies the end of summer and for many the beginning of the school year. Does anyone remember when you weren’t supposed to wear white (especially white shoes) after Labor Day? I don’t believe that is true anymore.

How do you celebrate Labor Day? We will be having Jalapeno & Cheddar Dogs, Smoked Sausage and Lit’l Smokies with bbq sauce. For sides we will have homemade french fries or chips and a cucumber & tomato salad from the garden. If I get real ambitious, maybe I’ll make some homemade ice cream.  Yummy!! Mouth is watering – can’t wait!

Trent’s Birthday

Today is my son, Trent’s 34th birthday. Here is a picture of him 30 years ago. Isn’t he a cutie!!

I made him a seasoning & snack pack that included 4 seasonings (Crazy Herb, Garlic & Chive, Turkish and Spicy Indian), 2 popcorn containers, microwave popcorn and a can of chips.

Since I did not have a plain gift bag large enough, I took this brown bag

and printed a birthday cake. Then glued it onto the bag.

I have been able to get all my homemade and hand crafted gifts completed on time this year. I have also been making hand colored cards with my thoughts printed on them. Just another personal touch.

Peach Ice Cream Day

With summer here, it is a perfect time for ice cream. I made some homemade vanilla ice cream last week. My ice cream maker takes no more than 4 cups of liquid.  I used some half ‘n half, almond milk, a can of goat milk and a teaspoon of vanilla. This ice cream turned out well with a little tang from the goat milk.

To add a little more flavor and texture, I found a package of frozen organic peaches in the freezer.  I took them out and cut about half the package into bite size pieces. I than mixed the peaches with the ice cream and placed in the freezer to firm up again.

I would suggest getting an electric ice cream maker and getting creative this summer.

French Fry Day

I don’t know if you can tell or not but I have been sort of flying by the seat of my pants with recent posts. I can’t seem to get into prewriting subjects.  So what I’ve done is find what type of food day is happening and then proceed from there.  I’m sure you all have noticed that there is some special day – every day.

Even though we are still on a ketogencic diet, we do enjoy some potatoes every once in a while.  I shared a Confetti Roasted Potato Salad recipe earlier this week. We had 2 potatoes left so we decided to make some homemade chips which is really a thinly sliced french fry.  I was going to use the slicing blade on my food processor but Mac said he used to always use a box grater to cut thin potato slices.

So he cut these potato chips.

We fried them up and they were delicious.

I think homemade chips/fries are almost always better than store bought or fast food.
